We're proud to add Beck's Hybrids to our lineup of corn and soybean seed offering this season, and we hope you'll try some on your farm in 2026!
We had test plots in both Woodbine and Panama this year, and Shawn and I planted Beck's corn on our own farms along with hybrids from several other companies (yield results can be seen by clicking on the links below). The average yield of the Woodbine plot was a bit disappointing, so I think a person should take the results with a grain of salt. First, that field is very low-lying and wet: there's a 14-acre pond with no inlet or outlet, and the water level was at least 3 feet higher this year than last year, so the crop spent a large part of late-June through early-August with wet feet, and we most likely lost nitrogen. Second, I planted a competing variety around the plot that unfortunately experienced terrible green snap just before the reproductive phase, and we chose not to fungicide those areas, and I feel that created a "refuge" for crop disease and southern rust surrounding the plot.
The Beck's varieties we planted in our test plots were solid performers, but our on-farm results with Beck's Hybrids were even better. In general, the Beck's corn stood better in the field, was more harvestable (fewer dropped ears, stronger stalks), and yielded much better in our hill farms, even when compared to varieties that yielded a little better in some plots. Unfortunately, we didn't have any Beck's soybeans on our farms this year as we had already bought all of our soybean seed before we added the dealership. Shawn and I signed up for a 3-year Commitment Rewards program to buy a new-to-us draper head just before harvest. Frankly, it was a little bit of a leap of faith since we hadn't harvested any Beck's at that point. Based on what I've seen during this year's harvest, I'm looking forward to planting a lot of Beck's corn and soybean varieties next year, and I'm feeling very good about our decision to use Commitment Rewards. If you want to learn more about Beck's Hybrids, please give us a call and we'll be glad to talk!
